About this video
Imagine a classroom where medical students could learn from a real human heart without the presence of the actual organ. There is no need to fantasize about this futuristic wonder because approximately five years ago the question of how the medical field would fill the need for a lifelike representation of the human heart was answered. The solution was found when a group of seasoned medical clinicians found an unlikely partner in the form of the award-winning, UK-based visual effects company Glassworks. The outcome of this surprising partnership was Heartworks, a computer-generated, animated 3D model of the human heart.
Today Glassworks is announcing an addition to the Heartworks family in the form of the "Transthoracic Echocardiography Simulator". Glassworks artists and animators used XSI 3D animation software to attain the incredible applications of the new product, which allows for real-time simulated TTE imaging of the virtual heart using a manikin. The images are derived in real time from slices through the beating 3D virtual heart model, which are then processed to generate a realistic 2D 'echo image', allowing the user to achieve a simulated echo image from any probe position.
The product was developed by Glassworks in Collaboration with Existential Asylum Ltd and IML. "We worked closely with our friends Dr Sue Wright MBBS FRCA, Dr Andrew Smith MBBS FRCA and Dr Bruce Martin MBBS FRCA who guided us through the highly complex medical requirements of the simulator".
Not only does the new package include the simulated 3D model of the heart from the original anatomy package but it also provides display of the chest wall, ribs, sternum and spine as
well as great vessels, lungs, pericardium, diaphragm and liver. The extensive coverage of the new model increases the benefits of the product tenfold! The manikin torso is incredibly lifelike both in feel and in positioning of anatomical structures. The realistic quality of the form enables easy use of the handheld ultrasound probe to create realistic effects on cardiac imaging. With the acquisition of this system one can expect simulated heart controls as well the components of the "Transesophageal Echocardiography"(TEE) and anatomy packages, in addition to the ability to generate 'slideshow' presentations.
"There is enormous demand for this type of skill in the field of intensive care, from cardiac physiology students to clinical practitioners. The inclusion of the HeartWorks simlulation experience in our course will enable delegates to observe and safely practice skills for a day in a typical scenario before they go on to hone their skills in the peri-operative setting"

The advantages of the Transthoracic Echocardiography Simulator are beyond belief! The benefits of the package reach a wide array of medical experts. The realistic qualities displayed both virtually and on the manikin, offer cardiologist and medical students alike the opportunity to learn and practice with a product which mimics the human heart. The product is more efficient financially for medical training; it has advantages as part of practitioner education, clinical applications and reduction of risk. This amazing new simulator has already had a major impact on the medical field and orders are pouring in from every corner of the globe.
